Glass Tube RFID Transponders: The Original Rugged Micro-Tag
Before anti-metal PPS and ceramic capsules, there was the glass tube. A 2×12 mm or 4×32 mm borosilicate cylinder with a tiny coil and chip inside, hermetically sealed, inert, biocompatible. LF 125 kHz and HF 13.56 MHz dominate; UHF glass tubes exist but are rare because of size constraints. These transponders are injected, pressed into plastic, or glued into a drilled pocket where nothing else fits.
Core Strengths
- Chemically inert: survives solvents, autoclave, body fluids.
- Size: 1.4 mm dia available for mouse ID.
- Permanent: no battery, 30-year data retention.
- Read: LF 2–8 cm, HF 1–5 cm.
Where They Live
- Livestock & pet: 134.2 kHz FDX-B ISO 11784/85 injectable ID.
- Lab animal: mouse/rat subcuticular tag for phenotype tracking.
- Surgical instruments: HF glass tag in handle spine, survives 1000 autoclave cycles, gives each forceps a serial.
- Precision parts: miniature gear, diamond Tool, watch movement—pressed into plastic holder.
- Wine & spirit: enclosed in capsule for anti-refill (niche).
Industrial Crossover
CNC tool shank too small for a screw tag? Drill 3 mm blind hole, press-fit glass transponder, grind flush. Tool presetter reads HF, binds tool offset to serial forever.
Limitations
Glass breaks under impact—do not use on stamping dies. LF has no anti-collision beyond ~5 tags; HF ISO 15693 handles 50+ in a tray.
