Injection-Molded and Embedded RFID tags: Identity Cast Into the Material

The most durable tag is the one you cannot remove because it was never attached—it was molded in. During plastic injection, a pre-placed RFID insert (usually UHF EPC Gen2 in a PPS or TPU shell) is placed in the mold cavity, plastic flows around it, and the cooled part emerges with a permanent tag at a known location. Same principle applies to rubber tire building (tag placed in carcass before cure) and to compression-molded phenolic handles.

Common Targets

- Plastic pallets: UHF tag molded into corner block, survives 10 yrs outdoor.

- Tires: HF or UHF tag embedded in sidewall rubber before vulcanization, lives 80k km.

- Tool handles: screwdriver/PET grip molded around HF tag.

- Automotive: bumper bracket, interior trim clip with molded HF for disassembly sort.

- Medical: surgical tray handle molded-in HF.

Design Rules

Tag must withstand injection pressure (up to 150 MPa) and melt temp (180–320 °C for PP/PA/ABS). PPS or TPU shell rated accordingly. Antenna oriented away from steel mold core to avoid detune—mold designers leave 3 mm plastic over tag.

Read Performance

Molded UHF in PP pallet reads 7–12 m on handheld. Tire tag reads 1–3 m through rubber (UHF) or 2–5 cm (HF) at fitting station.

Why Not Stick a Label?

Adhesive fails under UV, fuel, NaOH wash. Molded tag has zero maintenance and cannot be swapped during theft—critical for pallet pooling and tire warranty.
