Flexible and Sewable RFID tags: Identity That Bends, Washes and Survives
Not every Asset is a steel beam. Uniforms, surgical linens, firefighter PPE, airline blankets and automotive seat covers all need an ID that bends with the fabric, survives 100 industrial wash cycles, and does not stab the wearer. Flexible RFID tags—built on polyimide, PET or woven substrate—and sewable tags with RFID Inlay laminated into a fabric label are the answer.
Two Families
1. Flexible sticker tag: 0.15–0.3 mm PI or PET base, etched aluminum antenna, HF or UHF. Peel-and-stick to curved plastic, rubber hose, robotic arm sleeve. Rated −40 to +250 °C short dwell.
2. Sewable textile tag: RFID inlay sandwiched between two layers of polyester twill, edge-sewn into a uniform or sheet. HF 13.56 MHz dominates (short range, no cross-talk in linen pile); UHF used in retail apparel for 6 m gate reads.
Industrial Laundry Reality
A Hospital laundry washes at 70 °C, 120 rpm, alkaline detergent, tunnel dryer 120 °C. Cheap paper UHF dies in cycle 3. A proper laundry tag (encapsulated HF or UHF in TPU) survives 200+ cycles. Each tag carries linen type, owner department, wash count—auto-incremented at every chute reader.
PPE and Safety Gear
Fire turnout coats sewn with heat-resistant sewable UHF tag; inspector handheld reads ID, checks last thermal exposure test date. If coat failed SCBA drill log, system blocks issue.
Apparel Retail and Automotive
Garment hangtag with embedded UHF drives 10k items/min POS count. Car seat cover sewable tag binds VIN to trim variant.
Specs That Matter
Bend radius ≥6× thickness, wash cycles ≥100, tensile on sew seam ≥50 N, read range 1–8 m UHF / 2–10 cm HF.
