High-Temperature RFID Tags 200–1200 °C | Ceramic & PPS Industrial Tags

High-Temperature RFID tags: Keeping Identity Alive at 200, 600 and 1200 °C

Some industrial processes simply erase every conventional ID method. Paint e-coat bake runs 180–210 °C. Steel slabs leave the caster at 800 °C. Investment casting molds see 1100 °C. A barcode burns in seconds, laser etch gets buried in scale, chalk is a joke. High-temperature RFID tags are the only auto-readable carrier that can ride through the heat and still report a serial number on the far side.

Temperature Tiers and Tag Types

- 200 °C continuous: PPS hard tag, polyimide flexible tag. Used on weld skids, powder-coat lines, food retort.

- 250–350 °C: ceramic capsule UHF/HF, glass-encapsulated chip. Paint shop skid, engine head cast-in.

- 500–700 °C peak (short dwell): alumina ceramic tag with air gap, read in <300 ms as slab passes antenna before re-entering furnace.

- 1000–1200 °C: sapphire-windowed transponder in sintered ceramic, pulse-read; chip junction SOI/SiC rated to 225 °C, tag sleeps above threshold, wakes when cooled.

Construction Details

No organic adhesive survives 300 °C. Tags use ceramic cement, laser weld pocket, or cast-in-place capsule. Antenna is etched stainless or screen-printed silver on ceramic. Chip is flip-chip attached with gold wire, encapsulated in glass or epoxy rated for the tier.

Where They Go

- Automotive paint: ceramic UHF on skid beam, 300 bake cycles.

- Foundry: PPS tag on ladle yoke (reused 1000+ heats), ceramic capsule on mold ID.

- Steel mill: sapphire UHF on slab side, read at reheat exit.

- Medical: HF glass tag on surgical tray, autoclave 134 °C/3 bar daily for 5 yrs.

- Aerospace: ceramic tag on turbine bracket, thermal cycle log.

Read Strategy

Above 700 °C the chip is offline. System architecture must dual-write: tag user memory updated when readable, MES mirror updated always. At roller table, pyrometer triggers reader for 250 ms window; if tag answers, great; if not, fallback to OCR camera.

Lifecycle Math

Ceramic skid tag $22, survives 3 yr paint loop, replaces $0.05 barcode reprinted 20×/day. ROI in <4 months on a 30-skid line.
